Attendance Policy

Every student is expected promptly at each class and prepared with all required class supplies. For absences, students are responsible for informing the instructors and learning the missed material on their own.

Make-Up Classes

If class is cancelled for such reasons as inclement weather, the Principal shall schedule a make-up class.

Dress Policy

Students are required to wear a uniform outfit appropriate for instruction, including a pa’u for females.

Students are required to purchase and care for required constumes, implements and accessories.

Code of Conduct

Hālau O ‘Aulani promotes a family-friendly environment of appropriate language and instills values, self-discipline, integrity, responsibility and respect. Each student is expected to be fully committed to achieving the instructional objectives and to conduct himself/herself in an appropriate way in all Hālau activities. The chief instructor is the arbiter of these standards. This membership is not nominal. The essence of the ‘ohana is a standard of behavior and code of ethics which exemplifies the ideals of family. Explicitly, this standard is characterized by respect of self, respect for the well-being of other students, and respect for the art.

Discipline Policy: The instructor (Kumu and/or Alaka’i) will take appropriate action to deal with disruptive student behavior in the classroom.

1. First Offense – Verbal warning and possible Time-Out.Time-Out. A minor-aged student may be assigned to the time-out area within the classroom for the duration of a class period. Students sent to Time-Out may be subject to further disciplinary action by the administrator (Principal or Vice-Principal).
2. Second Offense – Student conference with parent (if minor age student) and school administrator (Principal or Vice-Principal). Students who violate the studio and Hālau rules may be prohibited from attending Hālau until a parent conference with an administrator is held.
3. Third Offense– Suspension: Students who violate the studio and Hālau rules will be prohibited from attending the next class session.Expulsion – Students who continue to violate the studio and Hālau rules after the third offense will be expelled from school.

Failure to abide by the established facility rules of the Arlington County Cultural Affairs Division and accepted standards of behavior will also warrant disciplinary action by the Principal and/or Vice-Principal.

Eating and Drinking: No gum, food/snacks or drinks are permitted during instruction.

Class Visitations: Parents/visitors wishing to observe class must obtain prior permission from the Principal or Vice-Principal. Parents/visitors must comply with the same rules of behavior as the students and cause no disruption to the classes.

Health & Injury Policy

The school will seek to obtain medical attention for a student’s injuries and/or other health problems with reasonable attempts to notify the parents or responsible guardian. Parents and adult students are responsible for any and all medical costs incurred for such treatment. Parents and adult students are also responsible to maintain updated medical information for the school.

Common sense should govern the parent’s approach to the health of the individual child. Please adhere to guidelines for keeping yourself or your child at home, e.g., any fever greater than 101º (100º under the arm).

The instructor must be notified if your child has a contagious disease so that parents of other children may be notified of the possible exposure.

A student will be sent home by the instructor if signs of illness are detected.

Please give yourself or your child a chance to convalesce at home after an illness. Do not report to class or send your child to school unless he/she can participate in all activities of the normal school curriculum.

In addition, please let the instructor know of any changes in your child’s or your usual routine (e.g., shots, visitors, illness or death in the family). If you or your child has an allergy or other condition that may be mistaken for illness, please inform the instructor.
